The Carolinas Neuromuscular/ALS-MDA Center, established in April 1998, provides comprehensive treatment for patients with ALS and other related motor neuron diseases. The Center regularly sees patients from over 40 states and has assessed patients from multiple countries around the world as well. Many travel great distances every quarter to Charlotte for the unique blend of proactive and comprehensive care offered. They believe in our message of hope. The Center helps patients learn how to compensate for and adapt to functional disability caused by the disease, enabling them to live more productive and independent lives. We have an exceptionally large and active loaner closet of equipment from which our patients take advantage. We provide education and evaluation for all types of adaptive equipment, including wheelchairs and communication devices. There are two support groups currently running from the Center, and we offer individual counseling as well.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and related disorders (ALS) are commonly and historically thought to be untreatable diseases, and most patients are told to “put their affairs in order”, and then sent home. Patients often come to their initial evaluation at our Center with mild weakness, and have completely given up all the activities/occupations which are important to them. Their function has been negatively impacted by lack of hope and exacerbated by negative attitudes more than any particular weakness. The Team at the Carolinas Neuromuscular/ALS-MDA Center focuses on the solutions and not the problems that those solutions address. Follow-up visits are not designed solely to document disease progression but to discover new areas worthy of intervention. New treatments and hope for the future are the two most important medications.
