The Edwin D. Holt Communications Laboratory
Carolinas Neuromuscular/ALS-MDA Center
Carolinas Medical Center

Honoring the life and memory of their loving husband and father, Mrs. Leigh Holt and her children, Christa, Morgan, and Win, are proud to announce the establishment of The Edwin D. Holt Communications Laboratory as of May 16, 2005.

The Edwin D. Holt Communications Laboratory serves as an evaluation, treatment and training facility for ALS patients with communication needs. A speech-language pathologist who specializes in Augmentative-Alternative Communication (AAC) and assistive technology is available to demonstrate equipment and facilitate hands-on trials. If speech becomes difficult to understand, a patient may need an AAC or speech generating device.

The Edwin D. Holt Communications Laboratory offers a wide variety of text and symbol-based systems and computer-based software that can be accessed manually, via switch/scanning or with eye-gaze. It is the Center’s goal to identify and implement a way to communicate so that patients can participate in day-to-day decision-making and conversations with their loved ones and caregivers regardless of physical limitations. Once an appropriate communications system is identified, equipment may be borrowed from the loaner closet.

The PinStripes Fund will continue to provide support for The Edwin D. Holt Communications Laboratory. Donations to The PinStripes Fund in memory of PinStripes Co-founder Ed Holt will be directed in support of patient loaner communications devices for The Edwin D. Holt Communications Laboratory. On-line donations may be made via this website or mailed to The PinStripes Fund, Carolinas HealthCare Foundation, P.O. Box 32861, Charlotte, North Carolina, 28232.
